Story Time with Author Debra Kempf Shumaker

Book cover for SUNDAY SCARIES by Debra Kempf Shumaker

Join us for a very special story time to celebrate the beginning of the school year. Author Debra Kempf Shumaker will read her new picture book, SUNDAY SCARIES, followed by a fun activity and coloring.

Josie loves the weekend. She gets to do all her favorite things with mom and dad like movie night and eating the fluffiest pancakes ever. But then it starts. At first, it’s just a tickle in her throat. A wisp of a shadow behind her back … MONDAY is coming. Josie has a case of the Sunday scaries, maybe her parents too.

A playful exploration of the anxiety that bubbles up on Sundays when thinking about Monday and the week ahead, with practical methods on banishing those Sunday scaries for good!

The perfect read aloud for the “scary Sunday” before the first day of school, and a great book to have in your arsenal for the Sundays ahead. Debra will be available to sign copies after her reading.

No RSVP necessary for this event, but if you’d like to reserve a copy of the book in advance, please stop in to the store or call Cozy Calico at 571 409 0897. This will help us ensure we have enough copies on hand!

Our first book club will feature A FORTUNE OF SAND by Ruta Sepetys. Sign up by purchasing the book in store or over the phone.

The daughter of an automotive magnate escapes to an artistic retreat that holds more secrets—and more intrigue—than she could have ever imagined, in this Prohibition-era novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Salt to the Sea.

Detroit, 1927. A city of smoke and ambition, where glittering wealth conceals a graveyard of secrets.

Marjorie Lennox is the youngest daughter of a powerful automotive dynasty, a family known for money, not manners. Artistic, impulsive, and always slightly out of step, Marjorie has long been dismissed by her controlling father and self-absorbed siblings. But when she secretly applies to an exclusive arts program funded by an elusive benefactor, she sees a chance to redefine herself on her own terms.

The building is grand. The participants are gifted. But something…is off.

The program is uncomfortably restrictive. Doors lock at odd hours. Strange sounds echo through the halls amid whispers that women are disappearing. And the handsome benefactor’s presence—mostly absent, yet somehow everywhere—begins to unnerve her. As Marjorie’s sense of self begins to slip, so does her grip on the truth. What happens to women who don’t fit neatly into a gilded frame?

Set against the crumbling grandeur of 1920s Detroit and inspired by actual, long-buried historical events, A Fortune of Sand is a haunting mosaic of glamour and grift—a novel about those who vanish, and those who demand to be seen.

A princess with a mostly useless magical talent takes on horrible monsters, a dozen identical masked heroes, and a talking lion in a quest to save a kingdom—and herself—in this affectionate satire of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale The Twelve Huntsmen.

Someone wants to murder Princess Melilot. This is sadly normal.

Melilot is sick of being ordered to go on dangerous quests by her domineering stepmother. Especially since she always winds up needing to be rescued by her more magically talented stepsisters. And now, she's been commanded to marry a king she’s never met.

When hideous spider-wolves attack her on the journey to meet her husband-to-be, she is once again rescued—but this time, by twelve eerily similar-looking masked huntsmen. Soon, she has to contend with near-constant attempts on her life, a talking lion that sets bewildering gender tests, and a king who can't recognize his true love when she puts on a pair of trousers. And all the while, she has to fight her growing attraction to not only one of the huntsmen, but also her fiancé’s extremely attractive sister.

If Melilot can't unravel the mysteries and rescue herself from peril, kingdoms will fall. Worse, she could end up married to someone she doesn’t love.
